This issue has a very special article featuring Anita Lasker-Wallfisch. Mrs. Lasker-Wallfisch was a member of the Women's Orchestra at Auschwitz and was interviewed by Jarred Dunn at her home in England. Jarred's exceptional writing captures the essence of her experiences and conveys her perspective in a way that is both respectful and empowering. It is tremendously generous of Mrs. Lasker-Wallfisch to reflect upon and share her experiences. Through her continued engagement in music, many more generations will benefit from her message that governmental cuts to music programs are "short-sighted stupidity". She describes music as "above international barriers" and that when we teach music, we are teaching "unity". This beautifully written article is in stark contrast to the surreal circumstances and inexplicably horrific experiences she survived. However, as a reader we are brought to a place where Mrs. Lasker-Wallfisch would like us to be thinking: that "music is not a luxury", that humanity needs music--that "we need music".
